Take the roads less travelled with the Sunshine Saunter that will take you along roads such as; Marine Drive, Victoria Drive, Sardinia Bay Road, Heron Road, Seaview Road, Chelsea Road, Kragga Kamma Road, Oceanview Drive, Van Stadens Road, Draaifontein Road and Cows Corner.
The Ibhayi Sunshine Saunter is a circular journey of discovery for the family, within 50km of the Port Elizabeth city centre.
Discover SAMREC (the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre) Cape Recife Nature Reserve and the lighthouse.
Further down the coast you’ll see Sardinia Bay and Schoenmakerskop (stop and do Retha’s Walk).
Then venture into the pretty countryside of Theescombe, Chelsea, Seaview, Maitland and Colleen Glen which offer game farms, pottery crafters, fun activities for the kiddies, 4×4 trails and quad biking for outdoor adventurers, along with golfing opportunities for the sporty.
The wetlands conservation area, Seaview Lion Park, Kragga Kamma Game Park, Holmeleigh Farm Yard and Maitland Nature Reserve are some of the wildlife destinations worth visiting along the way.
Thirsty wine lovers can visit PE’s own winery – Theesecombe Estate Wines, whilst the hungry are well served by Elephant Walk Restaurant, Indabushi Brunch Restaurant, Dizzy Dolphin, Thatchwoods, Boma Restaurant, Wurst Wagen Ital Ice Cream, Grass Roof and Barnacles.
Keep a beady eye out for signboards to nature reserves and conservancies, while twitchers should keep a look out for endemic birdlife in coastal forests, particularly the Knysna turaco (loerie) and jackal buzzard.
Schoenkamerskop overlooks the site of the sinking of the famous Portuguese ship, the Sacramento. which went down carrying over 40 bronze cannons in 1647. The free entrance Sacramento Trail is named after this ship.
