Hugh Bartis, Head of the Department of Tourism at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), has been appointed by Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk to serve as a member of the Research Policy Expert Forum.
The establishment of the Forum is in response to challenges highlighted in the National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS) which include a lack of clear tourism research in South Africa as well as policy gaps with regards to development of the sector.
The Forum’s purpose is to create a peer review platform for the Department of Tourism’s research, knowledge management, monitoring, evaluation and policy development projects. Bartis and his peers, who serve in the Forum on a voluntary basis, will ultimately ensure the credibility of practices in these areas.
Bartis’ two-year membership to the Forum commenced on 1 October 2013.
“I am very humbled with the appointment to the Forum,” says Bartis, “At the same time, I feel very honoured as it recognises specific expertise which I have acquired over the years. At NMMU we place a premium on teaching and learning, research, and engagement, and this appointment allows me to straddle those three spheres of excellence.”
