Elite police investigators the Hawks are probing massive irregularities contained in an explosive report which details how millions of rands were allegedly misspent by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, plunging the metro into a cash crisis in 2010, according to a report on The Herald Online site.
It says the report, which mayor Zanoxolo Wayile has been sitting on for the past year, details shocking anomalies including how one employee was allegedly paid R3m as an acting allowance for September 2010, when the metro was on the verge of bankruptcy. The data mining report, which was commissioned by former acting municipal manager Elias Ntoba to verify the metro’s database between July 2008 and September 2010, also unearthed a string of alleged irregularities amounting to about R159.2m and also recommended that a full forensic investigation be conducted. The report also detailed how the metro had overspent its budget by R3bn.
