CAPE TOWN – A man who allegedly murdered a Port Elizabeth woman will return to court next Wednesday, Eastern Cape police revealed on Thursday.
Hassiem Cassiem was arrested on the same day he allegedly killed 29-year-old Veronique Grootboom.
The crime took place in the early hours of Monday morning.
Grootboom and her boyfriend, who is still recovering in hospital, were tied up and repeatedly stabbed with knives.
Police spokesperson Stanley Jarvis says the suspect fled the scene with the couple’s car.
He says Cassiem will formally apply for bail next week.
“The suspect appeared in court this morning. His case has been remanded to 8 January for a formal bail application,” Jarvis said.
“He is being kept in custody and has been referred to St Albans Prison.”
