Food Trees for Africa and Cell C will be celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July by planting trees and vegetable gardens and renovating schools around the country.
In the Eastern Cape, Cell C has selected Dumani Primary in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth. The school has already proved to be an environmental champion when it was selected as a finalist for the Eastern Cape in the national Eduplant competition. On Nelson Mandela Day, Cell C will work with the school’s educators and learners to continue greening the school with indigenous trees, permaculture guilds and organic mulch and compost. This is part of an ongoing campaign by Cell C to sustainably develop schools in disadvantaged areas through environmental education.
“What makes our campaign different is that we also put in the personal work-hours.” says Mervyn Visagie, Cell C Managing Executive: Eastern Cape. “We genuinely like to help whenever we can and the fact that we can help in this way, really makes us feel good about being with the company.”
The coordinator of the program, Joanne Carty says, “It’s really great that Cell C has such a strong sense of environmental responsibility and social development. Through such programs the company continues to promote the ideals and vision of Nelson Mandela’s South Africa.”
