The Humewood Golf Club will kick off the festive season on a high note by honouring one of their club legends as well as providing golfing enthusiasts in the region the chance to compete in an exciting mini festival of golf next month.
Thanks to the generous support of one of Port Elizabeth‘s major shopping centres, the Walmer Park Mini Festival of Golf will take place at Port Elizabeth’s famed links course on December 5, 6 and 7.
The club, which has introduced a family aspect to the Festival, will also use the opportunity to pay tribute to one of its most famous sons, Terry Long, a stalwart club member who has the remarkable record of shooting his age more than 750 times. His outstanding performances on the Humewood links have made Long a legend in the club records and he will be honoured at the prize-giving on Saturday evening. Born in 1922, the 92-year-old Long has been a regular competitor at Humewood since he moved to Port Elizabeth and joined the club in 1983. Six months ago he had a round of 85, but has been unable to play since due to a leg injury.
In releasing details of the Mini Festival, Humewood interim general manager Dave Emslie said: “What a pleasure to communicate good and exciting news to our golfing friends. Yes, we are going to have fun, laughter and a weekend of golf to celebrate the beginning of the festive season from December 5 to 7. Via the very generous sponsorship of Walmer Park Shopping Centre, we are delighted to present and invite all Humewood members and friends to participate in the Walmer Park Mini Festivel of Golf. An outstanding feature of this event will be the all-day Saturday competition where, after the prizegiving, the club will pay tribute to that Humewood golfing legend Terry Long.”
Walmer Park Shopping Centre are excited to be involved with this initiative. “We are very proud to be to be associated with Humewood Golf Club in this ‘family affair’ festival of golf,” Walmer Park Shopping Centre portfolio manager Leonie Scheepers said.
Emslie said they planned to make this festival an annual event and on each occasion they would select a Humewood stalwart to recognise.
The family aspect has not been forgotten by the organisers. The Mini Festival will tee off with an open competition on the Friday, followed by a similar format on the Saturday, and on Sunday, parents and their children will get a chance to experience a round at the links.
This parents-kiddies day will be managed by the Pro Shop and there will be two competitions, over nine holes and over five holes. The cost is R160 per team for the nine-hole competition and R100 per team for the five-hole competition.
All bookings for the festival can be done through Golf Operations on 041-583-3011 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Green fees will be R160 for adult affiliated members on Friday and Saturday.
The club’s last Grand Draw will be done at the Friday prize-giving, which will also see the club’s annual men’s awards function taking place.
