General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has awarded Stateline Pressed Metal (SPM) with its prestigious Supplier Quality Excellence award.
GMSA has a mission to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles with the highest levels of quality and safety on the road. Achieving this mission depends largely on the quality of the parts produced day in and day out.
SPM is a Tier One supplier to GMSA and supplies a number of parts for its Isuzu and passenger vehicle range, which are manufactured here in Port Elizabeth and Queenstown. “We have enjoyed a long-term relationship with GMSA, spanning 32 years,” remarks SPM CEO, Mark Gilbert. “And during this time we have continually prided ourselves on our quality product, reliable delivery, and this award cements that for us.”
Having been a partner of GMSA since 1983, it has enabled the localisation of part manufacture for GMSA, which in turn has resulted in local job creation. “To improve on our quality, and on time delivery we continue to invest in robot technology for our welding and assembly process,” adds Gilbert.
“The implementation of robotic systems was done in collaboration with the up-skilling of our existing workforce, instead of replacing people, we utilise the robots to perform the repetitive tasks and are training in-house personnel to customise and maintain.”
Having recently overhauled the management team, SPM which is 51% black owned and employs 190 people, is proud of how the new team have embraced their roles and the positive impact it’s had across the business quality, customer service and processes.
