Port Elizabeth: During an operation held last night, 25 August 2016, the Gang Task Team arrested five suspects wanted in connection with serious crimes committed in the Northern areas.
A 25 year old suspect was arrested for attempted murder allegedly committed on 25 August 2016 at 18:10 in Frans Street, Timothy Valley, Bethelsdorp. The 36 year old victim was cleaning the pool room at a house when shots were fired through a window. He sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. Suspect/s ran off. Not long after the incident, the 25 year old was arrested in Statice Street in Bethelsdorp.
Another 25 year old suspect was arrested on a warrant of arrest for the illegal possession of a firearm. On 2 August 2015 police spotted a suspicious vehicle in Gelvandale. When the police members stopped the vehicle, the suspect ran off but was apprehended and a .38 revolver was found in his possession. The suspect was released at the time, pending ballistic and DNA analysis.
Two other suspects, aged 18 and 23 years, were arrested for attempted murder which allegedly took place on 31 July 2016 in Glendenning Street, Shauderviile. The two suspects were walking down the road when they started shooting at the victim. The victim sustained a wound on his leg.
A 37 year old suspect was arrested for murder, which occurred on 29 July 2016 in Booysens Park. The deceased was seated at the back of a shack when he was shot in the head by the suspect.
All the arrested suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday, 29 August 2016.
Last night, members performing duties under Operation Lockdown also executed search warrants at houses in Shauderville and Bethelsdorp. Police confiscated 25 envelopes of dagga, 27 packets of dagga, 6 dagga rolls, 341 tik pipes and 1026 Stilpane tablets. The estimated value of the drugs is R26 650. No one was arrested.
The Acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Brigadier Ernie Neveling, welcomed the arrests and seizure of drugs. He said that the police will continue to ‘flush out’ criminal elements in these areas. He is also appealing to the communities to work with the police by reporting the whereabouts of wanted suspects.
