Friend leads Knights to victory

Quinton Friend led the Chevrolet Knights to a comprehensive 161-run win over the Chevrolet Warriors on the fourth day of their SuperSport Series match at Axxess DSL St George’s in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Full Scoring

Paceman Friend finished with the superb figures of 6-45 off 18 overs, while off-spinner Werner Coetsee picked up 4-34, as the Warriors were bowled out for 134 at the end of an extended morning session.

Friend, who began the day with figures of 5-4-4-3 made the initial breakthrough on the fourth day when he trapped the right-handed David White (18) leg-before after the batsman played across the line.

White and Ashwell Prince (18) had taken the score to 48 for three before White’s dismissal and Prince, who faced 21 balls before opening his scoring, was the next man to go, out leg-before to Coetsee.

Kelly Smuts (11) and Arno Jacobs added 22 runs for the sixth wicket but, 20 minutes before the scheduled lunch break, Smuts departed when he hoisted a Coetsee delivery towards long-off where Rilee Rossouw took a smart, one-handed catch.

Friend grabbed his fifth wicket, his third five-wicket haul of the season, in the next over when he removed Craig Thyssen (0) courtesy of a leg-before decision.

The Warriors were in freefall and Coetsee nabbed his third wicket when he bowled Arno Jacobs (19) before Friend had Gurshwin Rabie (2) caught at midwicket to complete a miserable period for the Warriors who had lost six wickets for 47 runs.

Simon Harmer (37) and Basheer Walters (4 not out) held up the Knights’ charge to victory with a 10th-wicket partnership which produced 39 runs but Coetsee completed the match when he had Harmer caught at deep midwicket.
