Free Wi-Fi provides access for NMMU students and residents #whereU@

12 May 2016 By MyPortElizabeth

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) project, active at 17 municipal buildings across the city, provides students with free access to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University learning sites and residents with free access to the municipal website where they are (#whereU@).

Launched by the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Mr Siyabonga Cwele and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan in April, the municipal Wi-Fi service also allows for 100MB complimentary internet access per device per day at the sites.

The Wi-Fi service sites are: Algoa Park Library, Cleary Park Customer Care, Mfanasekhaya Qqobose Customer Care and Banking Hall, Korsten Library, Korsten Customer Care Centre, Korsten Drivers Licence Testing Centre, Motherwell Library, New Brighton Customer Care, New Brighton Library, Newton Park Library, North End Library, Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre, Uitenhage Customer Care, Uitenhage Town Library, Walmer Customer Care, Walmer Library and Zwide Library.

At the launch Mayor Jordaan touched on the benefits this service brings to youth in particular, giving them access to business opportunities and skills development tools and highlighted the fact that youth engagement and empowerment are municipal priorities.

Mayor Jordaan encourages residents to make use of the service and use the opportunity to grab a book at a library or municipal information at a customer care centre after browsing the internet with compliments of the municipality. The project is in its infancy stage with the further rollout to more sites under consideration.

How do you connect?

In order to access the Municipal Wi-Fi Network, follow these instructions:

  1. Ensure that you are within range to be connected.
  2. Turn on the Wi-Fi setting on your device.
  3. Connect to the “Always On” network.
  4. Go to your internet browser and access a website.
  5. You will automatically be taken to a screen that will require you to register basic personal information.
  6. Select the free 100MB option.
  7. You will now have access to free mobile internet.
