The actions of a former Port Elizabeth detective had led to a breakdown in trust between Provincial Gang Unit members and the community in the city’s Northern Areas.
This was the testimony of state witness and former Gang Unit Commander, Colonel Michael Grobler, in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court on Thursday.
34-year-old Alicia Beeming was found guilty of defeating the ends of justice in August last year, for concealing her relationship with her boyfriend Hans Jordaan, a wanted member of the Upstand Dogs gang.
Grobler said that the court should not take lightly the fact that Beeming had access to classified dockets from complainants and witnesses.
He said a number of cases she had worked on also had to be dropped subsequent to her arrest.
Beeming, who is out on bail, is expected back in court on the 31 January.
