The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality hereby announces that the Forest Hill and Paapenkuils Cemeteries have been reopened with immediate effect for burials, subsequent burials and monumental works.
Following the closure of these cemeteries some months ago due to high underground water tables, the weekly checks conducted on the state of the underground water tables consistently revealed that the water levels were still high. Consequently, the cemeteries remained closed to burials. However, the test holes dug on the morning of 20 November 2012 revealed more positive results, hence the decision to reopen these cemeteries to burials.
It should be noted, however, that certain sections of both cemeteries will remain closed to burials, due to the high underground water levels:
- Forest Hill Cemetery: Sections 34 and 35 and the existing berm section closest to the Sasol side of the cemetery
- Paapenkuils Cemetery: Section 34.
The Municipality wishes to express its empathy to all the bereaved families who were affected by the decision to close these cemeteries.
