Following postponements in June due to waterlogged fields, five matches are set to be played in the EP Grand Challenge competition on Saturday (July 18).
Despatch, who have not played since their 22-22 draw with PE SAPS at the end of June, will be itching to get back into action to ensure a place in the top two on the final log when they host Grahamstown Brumbies.
After this weekend’s games there will be two rounds left for the teams to secure their places in the semifinals, which will be contested by the top four on the final log.
SAPS and Despatch are leading the way, but there will be no room for complacency and the Nelson Mandela Bay metro outfit will be fired up to douse the challenge of their Grahamstown rivals.
A key match will take place at the Central field in Uitenhage when Progress try to rescue a poor season against the high-riding Park outfit. After a shaky start to the season, Park have won five of their last six matches, producing the sort of late surge which could see them jump into contention for the playoffs.
Progress have been erratic for most of the season and unless they can find some sort of rhythm, they could have a difficult afternoon on Saturday.
Spring Rose will also be trying to rescue a faltering season when they host Kruisfontein. After five wins in their first seven matches, Rose have lost the last three in a row and they cannot take the Humansdorp visitors lightly, despite having homeground advantage.
Kruisfontein will be hurting after a setback against Park last weekend and they know that any further defeats will severely damage their playoff chances.
Similarly, Gardens will be looking to avoid the sort of performance which saw them lose to African Bombers recently when they travel to Windvogel to meet the league newcomers. Windvogel have struggled in their maiden year in the Grand Challenge and it will take a massive effort to keep the hard-running Gardens team at bay.
The fixtures, kicking off at 3.30pm, are: Despatch v Brumbies, African Bombers v Trying Stars, Windvogel v Gardens, Progress v Park, Spring Rose v Kruisfontein
