The Boardwalk Casino Entertainment Centre confirmed that a jewellery store in the Centre was held up during an armed robbery on 4 May, just after 6pm.
Four robbers entered and left the Centre on foot, via the Marine Drive entrance. One of the robbers entered the store, while another held a security guard at gunpoint. An employee at the store activated the panic button, releasing a fog bomb in the store and alerting the onsite security control centre.
The robbers then hijacked a car on Marine Drive to make their getaway, later abandoning it in Forest Hill near the Port Elizabeth airport.
Nobody was harmed in the incident, and trauma counselling has been offered to those affected by the incident.
The value of the goods stolen is still being assessed and no arrests have been made yet.
Casino management and security is co-operating fully with the SAPS, who are investigating the circumstances surrounding the robbery. All security surveillance equipment functioned exactly to form and has been made available to investigators. We would also like to thank the SAPS for their swift reaction to the incident.
All operations at The Boardwalk remain unaffected and the property is open for business.
