Victims of the shack fire that gutted the Chris Hani informal settlement in Port Elizabeth on Sunday have thanked the department of social development, Gift of the Givers and other partners who have continued to help them in these difficult times.
The fire gutted about 300 shacks and left more than 2000 residents homeless with no fatalities reported.Gift of the Givers was in the area providing meals for all affected residents.
MEC for social development Pemmy Majodina recently visited the area where together with Coega, SACP and Gift of the Givers she handed school uniforms to 120 school pupils.
“We thought of dedicating a large portion of our Back to School campaign to these children affected by the fire and I am grateful that we had played our part given the depressing situation,” Majodina said.
Zoliswa Ngxixi-Sigayeni, one of the victims, said she had lost everything when her shack was burnt down.
“All the efforts made by the government together with Gift of the Givers have minimised our pain at losing our belongings.”
Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile said he urged everybody to contribute foodstuffs, preferably nonperishable items, such as tinned foods to the victims.
