Port Elizabeth: The Fatherhood Foundation of South Africa (FFOSA) encourages fathers, empowers families and help children and communities affected by fatherless-ness. Fatherless-ness has been shown to contribute to an increase in child poverty, child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, increased levels of child mortality between conception and birth, child emotional abuse, child physical abuse, child and adult drug abuse, child and adult increase in suicide, child and adult self harm and much other destructive and abusive human behaviour.
In celebration of International Men’s Day 2017 on the 19th of November, the “Dad of the Year” Awards will be hosted, for the first time in Port Elizabeth. The event aims to honour men who contribute to the tremendous effort it takes to raise children in today’s society, to elevate the role of fatherhood and encourage a legacy of responsible fathering.
There will be four categories into which dads can be entered into: DIY Dad; Community Dad; Entrepreneur Dad, Sport Dad and a General Dad of the Year.
- DIY Dad: This award goes out to a father who is active in the home, fixing things, rather than replacing or calling out service providers. This dad should be passionate about passing the skill set on to his children.
- Community Dad: This award goes out to the dad that is always ready to help and serve those around him. He should be a leader in his community and a problem solver. A man people come to for wisdom and that people can rely on.
- Entrepreneur Dad: This award goes to a dad that runs his own business. This type of dad will have a demanding life with corporate pressures along with family responsibilities. He should display balance to his children, educating them on what is the most important.
- Sporting Dad: This award goes to the healthy and active dad. He should encourage activities with his children and teach them the importance of being outside and taking care of your body.
The awards ceremony will take place in the form of a family picnic at the MTR Smit Children’s Home in Circular Drive. Hosted by Pharos, we aim to transform the open space into a carnival style family picnic area. Kicking off at 11am, families will need to provide their own food, however limited eats will be sold. Zane Meas (CEO of FFOSA), along with other influential speakers, will address the public on various topics on fatherhood and leadership. This will be followed by the awards ceremony. Winning dads in their various categories will receive relevant prizes from our generous sponsors. Fathers will need to be at the event in order to receive their prizes. Live entertainment, games and a jumping castle will be provided.
A Dad can be nominated by a son, daughter or other person who desires to honour a Dad. This nomination recognizes that, in the eyes of his child or another, this man is worthy of being esteemed and honoured in his role as a Dad or mentor. Nominations will take place on social media on the relevant event page (Dad Of The Year Awards) by simply commenting. All information will be forwarded to the entrants.
This is a free event, there will be no entrance fee for the public.
