Through a collaboration with local creative group, Colours of You SA, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) kickstarted Tourism Month celebrations last night (Tuesday, 30 August 2016) with the launch of a month long exhibition showcasing images that celebrate Nelson Mandela Bay.
Photographers, creatives and Instagrammers were called to submit unique images of Nelson Mandela Bay which promote the people, adventure, heritage, nature as well as the city, using the #ShareTheBay and #ColoursofYouSA hashtags. From these submissions via social media, hundreds of images were selected to be showcased during the month of September at the Athenaeum – one of the city’s national monuments, located on Belmont Terrace in Central.
Keynote speaker for the exhibition opening and Nelson Mandela Bay Councillor Andrew Whitfield, is confident that the Bay area is poised to become the next best tourism destination in South Africa. “We are a fun, family-friendly, affordable destination and we are ready to compete for our rightful places as an international and domestic tourism destination of first choice,” shared Whitfield.
The public are invited to visit the Athenaeum during the month of September to view the exhibition where prints of the 10 selected photographers will be for sale as well as smaller prints shared online under the specified hashtag, featuring Nelson Mandela Bay. All proceeds will go towards Umzobo Wam, a local non-profit initiative supporting South African children in sharing stories of township life through art and photography.
“The exhibition will not only showcase amazing images, but will also achieve Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism‘s goal of reaching a global market, creating local ambassadors and uplifting industry stakeholders and the creative arts within our destination,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Chief Executive Officer, Ms Mandlakazi Skefile.
The people are the city and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism encourages the Bay’s citizens to immerse themselves fully in the photography exhibition by taking ownership of it and engaging in the #ShareTheBay and #ColoursOfYouSA campaign.
In addition to the month-long exhibition in September in celebration of Tourism Month, Nelson Mandela Bay will also assist, host and organise a variety of activations including sporting events and media campaigns. A number of these events will be digitally orientated to create awareness and provide the industry with the tools to harness the digital media space and opportunities.
“With the growth in social media, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism has in recent times increased a focus on digital marketing activities to reach locals and to encourage sharing through various digital campaigns which led to the growth of the #ShareTheBay hashtag,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Marketing Manager, Titus Chuene.
The exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, 01 September and residents of Nelson Mandela Bay can look forward to additional Tourism Month celebrations including a Heritage Day Instameet and an EC blogger networking event.
