Only 20% of the ex-councillors who were not re-elected in the May 2011 local government elections have so far been paid the gratuity they were promised.
Briefing the Standing Committee on Appropriations, Deputy Director-General of Provincial and Municipal Government Support in the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Shanaaz Majiet said that all gratuity payments had to be made by May 20.
She said in addition to speeding up the process, the department also had to ascertain whether the payments were taxable.
Majiet said that there had been delays with, for example, obtaining councillors’ banking details, but these were now in the hands of the department allowing the process to be speeded up.
