Port Elizabeth – EP Kings wings Yamkela Ngam and Sianda Grey each scored two tries to help their team beat South Western Districts 52-10 in their Vodacom Cup clash in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
Full-back Scott van Breda, former Springbok Luke Watson and centre Siyabonga Mangweni also scored.
The men from the Southern Cape had no answer, and only tries from Jeff Taljard and flank Lucas Floors added some respectability to the score.
The Kings are now level on points with the second-placed Pampas XV in the South Section, albeit having played a game more.
SWD, meanwhile, remain in sixth place with just seven points to their credit.
It took two minutes for the home side to make the breakthrough, as Ngam flew over the line to score his first of the afternoon. Van Breda slotted the conversion. The visitors had the chance to hit back in the third minute as they were awarded a kick-able penalty.
Taljard was wayward with his attempt, and four minutes later Van Breda scored a converted try to take the score to 14-0. Grey ran in under the posts in the 11th minute.
Seven minutes SWD Taljard scored a well-worked try, but any momentum was quickly thwarted as Grey and Ngam secured their braces before half time. An additional penalty from Van Breda meant his team enjoyed a 33-point lead at the break.
Eighth-man Watson, who has been recovering from injury, made a strong signal to the Southern Kings selection team as he then ran in an impressive try 10 minutes into the second period. Mangweni raised the 50 for the home side when he crossed the whitewash in the 57th minute.
With the win already wrapped up, the hosts were perhaps guilty of taking their foot off the accelerator. Former Cheetahs flanker Floors gave his team some consolation as he dotted down with 17 minutes remaining.
The Kings closed out the encounter well enough, and despite not scoring any further points, gave their fans an impressive victory to savour.
