CAPE TOWN – Eastern Cape police have fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse a violent crowd protesting in Uitenhage.
The demonstration comes after residents living in Lapland took to the streets when they were served with eviction notices.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has served notices to over 300 residents who are occupying land illegally.
Police say the residents have responded by blocking roads with rocks and burning tyres.
Police spokesperson Basil Seekoei says seven suspects have been arrested and are scheduled to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court on charges of public violence.
