I am delighted to announce that following vigorous engagements by the DA with the Department of Social Development, budget cuts to Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) have been amended.
The unannounced budget cut severely affected the care of vulnerable groups in welfare centres throughout the province and is not acceptable.
In a reply to an oral question in the Bhisho Legislature on Wednesday (subs: 3 June) Social Development MEC Nancy Sihlawi confirmed that unfair budget cuts to NPO subsidies for old age homes in particular will be rectified.
The cuts, according to the reply, were done due to the outsourcing of frail care at an increased cost at the expense of all NPO centres throughout the province.
I will monitor the MEC’s undertaking that funding owed to the organisations will be paid back and that they are all paid accordingly going forward.
Furthermore, the DA will ensure that the department investigates the awarding of the frail care tender and that a report is submitted in due course.
In a fair society we cannot allow our old age homes to collapse and the elderly and vulnerable members of our society to suffer. We will continue to champion their cause.
