The Sydenham Primary School will be the battleground where top honours will be sought in the Eastern Cape Open Chess Championships on 23 and 24 May 2014. This year’s competition got much tougher with Ugandan International Master Elijah Emojong (rating 2316) and Zambian international Kela Siame (rating 2045) confirming their participation.
Eastern Cape Chess President Winston Dalpat said: “Reigning Eastern Cape Champion Freddie Odendaal from Gelvandale will have his work cut out to defend his title against players as far afield as Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, the length and breadth of South Africa as well as all the regions in the Eastern Cape.
“We expect all our top players in the country to compete but also made provision for beginners and younger players to participate and enjoy this annual showpiece with us.
“We are also pleased that Coega Development Corporation sponsored fifty young players to be part of this prestigious event. All the kids are part of their development programme at schools which plays an important role to develop these young boys and girls holistically,” Dalpat said.
At least 200 competitors will test their mettle to walk away with R2 500 (1st prize), R 1 500 (2nd prize), R1 000 (3rd prize), lucky draws as well as trophies and medals.
