An elderly destitute Bethelsdorp grandmother will become a first time homeowner and get to spend Christmas in her new home following a Human Settlements response and intervention to rescue the destitute from the trenches of poverty and homelessness.
MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, will be handing over the new home and groceries to Maria Schooney on Saturday, 10 December 2016. Schooney will move into the 40 m2 Barberry Street house in Bethelsdorp with her daughter and grandchild.
A policy priority for the Department, the Destitute and Vulnerable Groups Programme, is a response and intervention to the plight of destitute and most vulnerable persons including the elderly, disabled, child headed homes and military veterans.
