Disney’s Little Mermaid swims into PE
The junior stage version of the 1989 Walt Disney animated musical The Little Mermaid is being presented by Theodor Herzl Primary School.
Based upon the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale, the musical will be seen on a Port Elizabeth stage for the first time when Theodor Herzl Primary School presents the show in the school hall in 14th Avenue, Walmer, Port Elizabeth, from August 28 to September 2.
Directed by Theodor Herzl High and Primary’s Head of Drama, Robin Williams, who is one of Port Elizabeth’s most admired and honoured theatrical personalities but is in her element when handling junior performers (and has already staged Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida, to excellent effect, for Theodor Herzl High earlier this year), the Little Mermaid cast includes almost every learner at the school in one way or another.
The 60-minute musical is adapted from the Academy Award-winning film and the subsequent 2008 Broadway production, and this version now forms part of the popular ever-lengthening Broadway Junior catalogue, the shows in which are designed especially for middle-school learners.
“This is classic Disney, with all the songs that so many children and adults will recognise from the much loved feature film,” says Robin Williams.
The original score for the movie, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, and including such songs as the catchy Under the Sea, Part of My World and Kiss the Girl, also won Oscars but, when moved to the Broadway stage included additional numbers with music by Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater.
The story of The Little Mermaid plays out in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the human world above.
But first, she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice!
The production will run from Wednesday, August 28, to Monday, September 2, with morning shows at 10am on Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday, and 9am and 11am on Friday.
Along with evening performances at 7pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Monday and 7.30pm on Saturday, there will be a special Sunday matinee at 3pm.
Tickets are priced at R20 for all the morning shows and R50 for all evening performances and the Sunday matinee.
Discounts are available for block bookings.
For further information on any aspect of the show, ticket sales and booking, call Kim Keen at the school on 041 581 4268.
