Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Thando Ngcolomba, was unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the ANC Nelson Mandela Region last night during a sitting of the party’s Special Regional Council held at Nangoza Jebe Hall. This follows after former Regional Chairperson Nceba Faku resigned as the Chairperson of the REC. Mr Tony Duba was elected as Deputy Chairperson to fill the void left by Cllr Ngcolomba.
Executive Mayor Benson Fihla, affectionately known as Oom Ben, was also formally accepted by the RGC as an ex-officio member of the Regional Working Committee and the REC.
Cllr Ngcolomba is not unfamiliar with leadership positions. He was the Chairperson for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture before being elected to the position of Deputy Executive Mayor of the municipality on 22 March 2013.
In his acceptance statement Deputy Executive Mayor Thando Ngcolomba said:
In my capacity as the Regional Chairperson, the Regional Executive Committee and the branches of the ANC asked me to extend warm revolutionary greetings and a special word of welcome to all delegates and special guests of the ANC attending the Provincial Conference of the ANC starting tomorrow (26 June) and ends on Saturday (29 June).
We welcome you comrades to our shores, the tranquil and friendly urban space named after Isithwalandwe, the icon and the great leader of our people Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. I know that before the Congress commence with its business you will pray not only for Tata Mandela but his family at large to be strong during this painful period of having to watch Madiba ailing.
Our branches trust that you will continue to cement and solidify unity and cohesion of the movement and the alliance in the conference. Furthermore we are clear that you will agree that the speed with which we deliver to our people must improve continuously. We would like to see this conference of the ANC reaffirming the organization as a leader of society and the reliable agent of change in society. The movement must meaningfully contribute to the resolution of the triple challenge in our society being unemployment, poverty and structural inequality.
As you arrive in municipal area, you will find that many of our people are shocked by a racist e-mail that emanated from a Mickey Mouse political party, a chief advocate of white supremacy. They are very clear now that it is only the ANC and its alliance that are the political servants who embrace non-racialism in practice. They are very clear that the Mickey Mouse party cannot continue to lie and pretend to care about the toiling masses and their plight, all they want is their votes. Our branches therefore hopes that the Conference will reject racism as a demon that undermines the democratic gains the country and its people have achieved.
On a progressive note we are excited that this conference will bring about shortlived happiness to our businesses and boost them a little bit.
We wish you a very pleasant stay in our region.
Politically, work hard but do not forget to enjoy the friendliness of our City.
Thando Chippa Ngcolomba
Chairperson of the ANC Nelson Mandela Region
