Teachers from eight local schools in the Kalahari recently participated in coaching clinics facilitated by the Dreamfields Project.
Held at a school in Rietfontein in the Mier Local Municipality in the Northern Cape, the “coach the coaches” one-day workshop is an initiative made possible by the Port Elizabeth based Chevrolet Ute Force in partnership with Dreamfields Project, the Non-Government Organisation that brings soccer development and soccer kit to disadvantaged schools.
The coaching workshop, which is endorsed locally by the Department of Basic Education, intends to improve the level of competitive soccer played by the surrounding schools explained Tim Hendon, Chevrolet Brand Manager. “This initiative is aimed at uniting the local schools and the respective communities,” he added.
The participating schools received brand new training kit, including bibs, nets, cones and a host of items aimed at creating the best environment for the budding soccer stars to train with. Once the workshop was completed, the Chevrolet Ute Force team visited each school to conduct on the ground training with soccer teams and coaching staff.
Each school also received One World Futbols, the nearly indestructible and ultra-durable soccer balls in their training pack. Hendon said these balls were ideal for training and playing on harsh surfaces. “Children can now play for longer without the concern of a deflated ball and the cost of purchasing a new ball every time they have to practice.”
Hendon said that the One World Futbols was part of a one and a half million-ball sponsorship made by global Chevrolet into disadvantaged communities across the world. “We are pleased that we could reach the learners from the Kalahari through this programme.”
To date the Chevrolet Ute Force project has impacted close to 100 schools since 2013 enabling hundreds of children to enjoy the beautiful game of soccer. In addition Chevrolet South Africa has distributed more than 60 000 One World Futbols in needy communities across South Africa as part of the global Chevrolet One World Play Project.
