Dance project set for Opera House

Dance production ‘Love in the Time of Revolution’ will be at the Port Elizabeth Opera House on Wednesday July 11 at 7.30pm

Fresh from their debut performance at the National Arts Festival, Love in the Time of Revolution, a collaboration by the Nelson Mandela University’s department of arts, culture and heritage and the Moving Assembly Project, will be staged at the PE Opera House at 7.30pm on Wednesday July 11.

The show, which was endowed with a prestigious Standard Bank Ovation Award for its run in the festival, is choreographed and directed by Port Elizabeth-born Moving Assembly leader Dane Hurst, NMU’s Nicki-Ann Rayepen.Original music is by the UK’s Paul Gladstone Reid and Bay artist Mninawa Mangweni, NMU alumnus Ruan Coetzee and NMU alumnus and lecturer Tiago Vital, and costumes by Nehemiah Latolla.

Hailing from the Bay’s northern areas with a passion for community service, Hurst has gone and created a name for himself internationally through his work.

The Moving Assembly Project was formed in 2016 with a primary focus of youth development through dance upliftment in underprivileged communities. It is assisted by the Linbury Trust and personal donations from individuals in the UK. The project comprises a multicultural and diverse cast of three dancers from the UK and the Rambert School. There are also professional dancers from Cape Town (Figure of eight dance collective), two students from Jazzart Dance theatre in Cape Town, and five students from NMU.

“The thinking behind this is to have the opportunity of creating an international exchange for the cast members, and creating a platform for students to develop alongside professionally trained dancers.“Furthermore, it is to stimulate the growth of the performing arts at the University,” Hurst said.

The Moving Assembly Project also hosted a series of free workshops for pupils from the northern areas, which took place at St Thomas High. These youth will form part of the curtain-raiser at the Opera House performance.

Tickets cost from R30 at the door. For more information, or to reserve tickets, e-mail Nicki-ann.rayepen@mandela.ac.za or danejhurst@hotmail.co.uk or call 041-504-2508.
