The DA in the province says it is deeply shocked at the news of the death of one of its member of provincial legislature (MPL), Pine Pienaar, who died on Sunday at the age of 56 of an unspecified cause.
Pienaar was born in Uitenhage and was the former shadow MEC for transport, roads and public works.
He also served as a DA councillor in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in the past.
DA provincial leader Athol Trollip said: “He has performed a yeoman service for all the people of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch. He will be remembered especially for his sterling work in the portfolios that he served with passionate energy.”
Trollip said Pienaar had left “indelible footprints” in the founding, establishment and consolidation of the DA in the province.
“He had a unique passion and commitment to growing the DA in all communities in the Eastern Cape and his passing will leave an enormous void in the DA.”
He described him as the personification of selfless service “and this was reflected in the many positions of leadership that he held in the party”.
Trollip said the party has conveyed its deepest condolences to the Pienaar family and thanked them “for all the sacrifices they made so that their son, husband and father could serve the people he loved so much”.
