There has been a spate of shootings in Gelvandale and Helensvale in the last couple of months.
The shootings are believed to be gang related and have claimed the lives of a number of residents.
Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has been campaigning in these areas.
She believes the DA is capable of bringing the alleged gang violence to an end.
“All of these areas have also been affected by drugs and gangsterism and many innocent lives were lost in the past couple of months. I have been sharing with the community some of the success stories in Cape Town and that a gang unit has been established in the city.”
The DA says close to 130 people have lost their lives in the past two years as a result of ongoing gang violence in parts of Port Elizabeth.
It called for the anti-gang and drug units to be reinstated in Port Elizabeth’s northern areas.
The opposition party says the money government spent on President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla residence could have been better spent to ensure safer communities.
