On Thursday afternoon councillors received an SMS notification that the Speaker, on request of the Executive Mayor, had called a Special Council Meeting for Friday 19th July at 10:00. Councillors only received the 103 page agenda at the meeting and were expected to make important decisions that affect the residents of our Metro. This late notice was received in the same week that the Executive Mayor called an illegal meeting for Thursday, which the Democratic Alliance refused to attend.
Today’s agenda sought the approval of a budget reduction across all directorates in excess of R22m without knowing or considering the implications of such a decision. The Executive Mayor appears to have forgotten that Council had to cut R228m from our budget before it could be approved in June. The Executive Mayor then ambushed councillors by requesting that we consider the approval of Ms Lineo Nkanjeni as Acting Municipal Manager without tabling an item before Council.
The Democratic Alliance is in favour of resolving the current labour disputes and the implementation of the TASK system in a responsible manner, not in the ad hoc fashion led by the ANC. The Executive Mayor must explain why these critical items were not tabled before Council during the extensive process undertaken to ensure the approval of the budget in June?
The Nelson Mandela Bay Council is being abused as a rubber stamp by the Executive Mayor and his cronies to ratify illegal irregular decisions as well as fulfill promises that have been made but cannot be kept. The DA will not allow this and we will do everything within our powers to ensure that this abuse is stopped.
