Following an earlier announcement that St George’s Park would host a large share of international matches this coming season there was more good news when Eastern Province Cricket scooped Cricket South Africa’s Most Improved Affiliate Award.
EP Cricket moved up 4 positions from 12 to 8 out of 16 members on CSA’s scorecard that annually measures, within each affiliate, 17 areas, including governance, youth development , umpires and admin.
Eastern Province Cricket CEO Jesse Chellan expressed delight at the results, which also earned EP Cricket a performance bonus of R330 000.
“The Board and I set ourselves the goal of being the most improved affiliate for the past season and we are extremely proud of the progress made at all levels towards achieving that goal, Chellan said.
“While our overall score moved from 57% to 70% we were ranked 3rd for Senior Provincial Cricket, 3rd for Provincial Academy and 3rd for Governance, which shows tangible proof of the measures put in place and the improvements made by staff and the board.
“We are ranked outside of the top 10 in the areas of Womens’ Development, Mini Cricket and Umpires, but we are addressing these and trust that next season’s scorecard will show further improvement”, he said.
Northerns scored the highest overall on CSA’s scorecard ahead of South Western Districts, North West and Free State, which were the top 4 ranked affiliates.
EPC President, Donovan May said “It is indeed a great achievement to see where we have come from over the past few years. Our administration and governance processes have shown great improvement and this augurs well for the future of the administration of this great game. I would like to congratulate and at the same time thank the Board of Directors the CEO and his staff on this great achievement.”
As part of a strategy to bolster the union, Eastern Province Cricket has embarked on a process to upgrade the venue and function facilities at St George’s Park towards making the grounds a preferred event location.
“As part of our resurgence we are excited about increasing the number of functions held at the venue and increasing public access to the facilities to the point where the community shares ownership in the development and growth of South Africa’s oldest and most historic ground,” Chellan said.
St Georges will host an ODI against Australia on October 9, the 1st Test against Sri Lanka on December 26 and an ODI against Sri Lanka on 28 January 2017.
