Fencing South Africa has announced that NMMU’s Missionvale campus in Port Elizabeth will be on guard as the first ever Eastern Cape venue to host a national ranking competition.
Campus director Dr Phakama Ntshongwana said she was very proud that the institution would make history for the province when they host this time-honoured but little known Olympic sport from August 21 to 23.
According to local coach Jessica Knoetze-Raper, whose Excelsior Fencing EC club is organising the event, the search was now on for promising high school learners and NMMU students to be trained as fencers.
“Time is short but with passion, commitment and resilience we will produce a team that can hold its own.”
Knoetze-Raper and her son Jon-Paul, who both sport national colours for pentathlon, will guide the team’s preparations for the competition, which is expected to draw top fencers from across the country.
The Madibaz have already produced some of SA’s best student fencers, with Xabiso Nyati and Chumani Nyezi featuring in the top 10 at the University Sport South Africa tournament last year.
