Two goals in the first half from Ruzaigh Gamildien and Thokozani Mshengu handed Bloemfontein Celtic a 2-1 win over bottom of the log Jomo Cosmos in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday night.
Cosmos’ consolation goal was scored by Alton Meiring early in the second half, but it was not enough to rescue a point for the team at the foot of the table.
The first 45 saw the home side start positively, but they quickly fell behind after a superbly placed free-kick from Gamildien.
The early goal gave the visitors the ascendency and they took control of the game before eventually doubling their lead ten minutes prior to the halftime break.
Cosmos did start well and came close to scoring the game’s opening goal in the opening minute of the match when Bamuzo Sono struck a 12-yard effort narrowly wide.
That early scare in defence shocked the Phunya Sele Sele into action and they began pressing forward in attack, winning a free-kick just outside the box in the ninth minute.
Gamildien stepped up and perfectly curled the ball round the defensive wall and into the top corner of the goal, 1-0.
Jomo Sono’s men tried to find their way back into the match and their only other chance of the half came in the 14th minute when a passing movement saw Siyabonga Nontshinga in space 12-yards out from goal, but he wasted the opportunity firing wide of the target.
Thereafter, however, it was all Celtic and only a matter of time before Clinton Larsen’s men doubled their lead which they did in the 36th minute.
Gamildien was at the heart of the move again creating some space down the right flank before Kgotso Moleko supplied a low cross from the right to find Mshengu inside the box.
The Celtic attacker made no mistake with a clinical finish from ten-yards out, 2-0, taking his side into the break firmly in control.
The start of the second half saw Cosmos fight their way back into the match and they were unlucky not to pull a goal back five minutes after the restart.
Thabani Stemmer was at his best, diving full stretch to his right to parry a 20-yard shot from Siyabonga Nhlapo around the post.
Three minutes later, though, and the home side was not to be denied when Nhlapo played Meiring through on goal and he made no mistake from 12-yards out, 2-1.
Cosmos continued to press forward thereafter, but they could not find the opening that would lead to the equalising goal surrendering them to their 12th defeat of the league season.
