THE Cape Recife Conservancy, which includes NMMU, Pine Lodge resort, South African Marine Rescue and Education Centre, Summerstrand Hotel, Humewood Golf Club, Noordhoek Skiboat Club, the Cape Recife Nature Reserve (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) and supporting organisations, has been working doggedly since 2008 to secure the area for the conservation and recreational benefit of the public.

Stop fiddling while Rome burns
I HEARD on the radio the minister of basic education had announced it would be compulsory for schools to offer indigenous language (is that the politically correct term?) from next year.
Transnet overlooks coloured applicants
TRANSNET opened posts at its container depot in Port Elizabeth in December last year. They wanted 27 lifting equipment operators to start in January this year.
Let us help fix the schools crisis
TOWNSHIP schools have been consistently losing pupils to schools in “town” or ex-Model C schools for a number of years now.
Criminals seen as outside community
THE incident of what has become popularly called mob justice in New Brighton (“Angry mob kills child rape suspect”, January 16) illuminates an important issue, namely that for communities such as the one in New Brighton, the police are not the only means of exacting justice on criminals.
Take off caps when anthems played
WHY do the cricketing authorities not ensure that the young boys, who accompany the Proteas and their opponents onto the field, remove their caps when the national anthems are played?
Action needed on rhino poaching now
THE news that this year has brought with it more rhino carcasses, mostly in the Kruger Park, minus the horns, has met with outrage and disbelief.
Donkin revamp leaves hotel patrons in dark
MANY patrons visiting our establishment have been upbeat about the recent upgrade of the Donkin Reserve and some of the new structures to be found there.

We must resist parole attempt by rapist pair
I READ that the two people convicted of raping and severely mutilating a young Port Elizabeth woman some 17-odd years ago are possibly to be paroled (“No parole yet for Noordhoek rapists”, January 18)!
SA must reject ‘payback time’ jobs for party members
THE recent appointment of Thami ka Plaatjie by President Jacob Zuma as the deputy chairman of the SABC board has given more credence to the allegations in municipalities and provinces that there are certain positions that are reserved and can only be secured by joining the ANC.

Rescue appreciated
MAY I, through the courtesy of your newspaper, express my grateful thanks to the very kind man who rescued my husband on January 9. Taking a friend’s dog for a walk, he got lost.
Fix EC roads before there’s nothing left
I WANT to sympathise with “Disgusted” from Cannon Rocks for the embarrassment of driving friends along the shocking and disgraceful road to Midfor and through the Alexandria Forest (“Coastal road in shocking state”, January 16).
Give schools admissions autonomy
CHRISTIAN Martin, MPL, wrote a letter which appeared in The Herald on January 16, referring to public schools acting illegally by denying certain pupils admission (“Beware of illegal reasons denying pupils admission to schools”).
Don’t support circus cruelty
THERE is more than enough evidence that circuses are archaic and come out of the dark ages. Wild animals belong in the wild, not carted around in beast wagons with no environmental enrichment and unable to practise their natural behaviour.

Free swimming unfair
I WENT for a walk on Sunday morning along the beach. From the slides side, I saw somebody swimming in the McArthur Pool complex.
Fund supporters want to see lists of contributions
Why is Bay wasting money on new wall?
CAN someone from the municipality please explain the need to erect a wall along the promenade from the McArthur Pool complex to Humewood Beach?
Open Walmer Library on Saturdays again
WHAT disappointing news about the Walmer Library being closed every Saturday morning.
Teach children in mother tongue
PUT simply, children taught in Xhosa for the first few years of school fail in large numbers when the language of instruction is switched to English because many do not speak, read or write it well enough for academic purposes.
Let children see animals in wild, not in captivity
WHEN my family from New Zealand and the United Kingdom were visiting recently we spent a night in the bungalows and chalets at the Addo Elephant National Park, which we all thoroughly enjoyed, particularly the grandchildren.

A struggle to renew car licences
THE poor post office is suffering again. In the last few weeks it has been nearly impossible to renew one’s car licence disc at many post offices around Port Elizabeth. If it is not the lack of paper to print the disc on, it is the “system” that is offline.
Sad loss to museum
THE untimely, tragic death of Noncedo Ngqondi has robbed us of a community leader and its impact is immeasurable as she was a councillor in the ward where the Red Location Museum is situated (“Bay in mourning”, January 17).

Probe why bus system approved
REGARDING Brian Hayward’s article, “New bus system probe” (January 13), I would like to add what should be probed from the outset is how this BRT thing was proposed and approved in the first instance, before more money is paid out to anyone involved in the planning.
Ineptocracy sounds familiar
INEPTOCRACY – does it sound familiar?
Commuters to blame too for poor driving
I WONDER just how many people realise that taxi commuters are just as much to blame for the erratic driving by taxi drivers we have in Port Elizabeth?

AS an animal lover and mommy to three rescued pets, I would like to salute the Animal Welfare Society and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on a wonderful outreach programme undertaken on January 18 in Walmer Township.

Company owned by partners
WITH reference to the article, “Will to fight back counts” (January 16), I would like to state Dumisa Design and Advertising, as was mentioned in the article, was a partnership between three partners from day one and not a sole ownership.
