The infighting between Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Athol Trollip and his Deputy Mongameli Bobani of United Democratic Movement (UDM) remains unresolved.
Divisions between the two played out in public during the State of the Metro Address at Despatch near Port Elizabeth.
Bobani, who arrived late, accused Trollip of not consulting with the coalition partners in writing the speech.
The DA is in a coalition government with UDM, Congress of the People (COPE) and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in the metro.
However, COPE and ACDP say they feel it was unnecessary to be involved in the process of writing the speech.
“We are shocked. As the UDM, we were not consulted about it at least. Trollip is not the Executive Mayor without the UDM. Trollip must be able to understand that this is a coalition government. This is not a DA-led coalition. This is a coalition government regardless of the city you are having. He just actually does whatever he wants on his own,” said Bobani.
