The annual Marina Martinique swim festival on Friday 30th December will close off the 2016 open water swimming session in great fashion with a Double Mile, 500m swim, Kids Bank2Bank and the feature Mile event all taking place in the stunning Marina Martinique canals from the Marina Wharf restaurant area.
The sheltered and warm Marina canals offer the perfect open water swimming conditions with festivities kicking off from 9am on Friday.
“We are excited to once again be a part of the Marina Mile events, ” said race organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zsports Events NPC, “This is another one of those epic must do family events and offers locals and holiday makers a fantastic opportunity to get in a great competitive swim before the year end.”
“Thanks to the efforts of Jeffreys Bay councillor and legendary open water swimmer, Brenton Williams, this event was resurrected in 2002 and grows from strength to strength each year.”
The Double Mile (3.2km) event will start at 9am from the Marina Wharf Restaurant beach area and will be followed by the 500m swim at 11am, the Kids 12 years and under Bank2Bank swim at 11h30 with the popular Mile event starting at 12 noon and followed by prize giving. The Mile swim will go through the scenic canals offering swimmers a stunning insight into the beauty of Marina Martinique which was built in the late 90’s. Marina Martinique is a magnificent showcase of man-made waterways, quaint bridges and luxury homes located on the outskirts of Jeffreys Bay.
Some of South Africa’s top open water swimmers are expected to contest the Mile event with upcoming Port Elizabeth open water swimming Cullum Biddulph tipped for a maiden win in the Mile event. The Double Mile swim offers budding Ironman participants a great training opportunity to end off 2016 ahead of their onslaught of one of the toughest endurance events in the world.
Online registration is recommended to avoid the R50 late entry penalty which comes with entries on race day.
