Bongi Ntuli was sent off in the opening stages to leave Usuthu with a mountain to climb, but they went on to take the lead through Mbulelo Mabizela on 35 minutes.
However, their lead lasted only 10 minutes as Roscoe Pietersen put past his own goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time to level the scores in Port Elizabeth, which earned the Chilli Boys a share of the spoils.
The game got off to a frantic start when Ntuli received his marching orders after just five minutes for an elbow on Chippa defender James Okwuosa.
Moments later Pietersen wasted a decent chance to open the scoring when he headed inches wide from a corner, before Bornwell Mwape fired over the crossbar from inside the penalty area on 18 minutes.
Pietersen was then denied by a fine save from Mbongeni Mzimela midway through the first half, but the opener would arrive 10 minutes later as the visitors were finally rewarded for their efforts.
Mabizela climbed highest to power home a free-kick to give the 10 men from Durban the lead, but they would be pegged back on the stroke of half-time with a slice of bad luck.
Pietersen would find the back of the net on this occasion, but unfortunately it came at the wrong end as his own-goal restored parity for the hosts.
Energy Murambadoro was called into action three times inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half to prevent Steve Barker’s men from going behind.
Chippa threatened again through William Twala and then Manti Moholo, but both efforts failed to test Murambadoro this time around.
Usuthu were hanging on now and Andile Mbenyane and Siyabulela Shai were both guilty of failing to hit the target with their respective efforts as the second half drew to a close.
Sifiso Hlanti had a rare chance for the visitors with three minutes remaining but he blazed wide, while Mbenyane spurned the opportunity to win it for Chippa at the death with an effort from 20 yards which cleared the crossbar.
