Chippa United played their very first game in their new home, Port Elizabeth in a friendly against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday. Despite losing 4-2, they were happy with the fans
The clash with the Amakhosi also saw the Chilli Boys unveil new boss Kosta Papic. They also showcased their new signings Eric Chipeta, Manti Moholo, Joseph Molongoane, Siyabonga Zulu, Thamsanqa Sangweni, Tsepo Motsoeneng, David Zulu, Jabulani Nene and Siyabulela Shai.
With that in mind, the move to the Eastern Cape couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Port Elizabeth is a good and beautiful, windy city. The atmosphere is good here. Fans are fantastic as you saw yesterday. They played a good role as the 12th player. You could see their passion for football. I think our arrival here in PE was a good thing, not only for us as a team but for them as well,” club CEO Peter Koutroulis told Sport24.
This will be their second season in the top-flight after gaining promotion from the NFD following their relegation two seasons ago and they believe the move to the ‘friendly city’ plus their fanatical support base in the city and province at large will steer them onto a respectable season.
They play their first official game at their new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in two weeks time when they welcome Platinum Stars in the ABSA Premiership. They recently lost Nigerian striker George Akpabio, who they had on-loan last season from Ajax Cape Town to its parent club following a DC ruling.
