Charl du Plessis – one of SA’s most versatile pianists

South African pianist, Charl Du Plessis will be playing on Tuesday, 7 October 2014, in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium at 19h30.

Steinway Artist, Charl du Plessis, is one of the most unique and versatile pianists South Africa has ever seen, working simultaneously in the classical and popular genres. The South African press hailed him as “a cult pianist” and “edu-tainer” (Pretoria News). His playing has been described as “brilliant” (Pretoria News) and “elegant” (Beeld) and “his music has an X-factor” (Volksblad).

He made his recital debut in the USA in 1999, and has subsequently enjoyed a remarkable and multifaceted career taking him to the rest of Africa, Europe, China and Japan. He regularly performs as recital pianist and soloist with orchestras and at major festivals in South Africa. He has become a regular performer at the esteemed summer Festival der Zukunf in Ernen, Switzerland He has been on the faculty of the University of Pretoria since 2001, and is the first lecturer at this institution to teach both jazz and classical piano.

Charl du Plessis recorded his first commercial CD with his jazz trio in 2007, and, in 2009 Du Plessis launched his most successful production to date: PIANO MAN – a compilation of piano music celebrating the 300th anniversary of the instrument

For his concert in Port Elizabeth, he chose the following programme:

  • Bach/Busoni – CHACONNE
  • Rachmaninov – SONATA no. 2 in B-flat minor
  • Chopin – FANTASY in F minor
  • Chopin – 2 Waltzes (Op 64 no. 1 2)
  • Gershwin – 3 PRELUDES, THE MAN I LOVE
  • Gershwin – RHAPSODY IN BLUE (solo version)
