Nothing seems to deter East London residents with a penchant for getting fresh air exercise and the organisers are anticipating another big entry when the popular SPAR Family Challenge takes place on October 8.
SPAR promotions and advertising controller Roseann Shadrach said they had made a few changes to the race this year, one of them being trying to avoid the strong winds of the past two years.
“We are trying to miss the wind which seems to pick up at midday, so the races will start earlier, with the 9.8km at 10am and the 5km at 10.15,” said Shadrach.
The Challenge, which is now in its third year, will also see a change in the route for the 2016 edition due to traffic congestion, but event organisers Craig Muller and Candy Boonzaaier do not feel it will significantly affect the runners.
Boonzaaier said the original route was on the road opposite SUPERSPAR Spargs in Beacon Bay, but said they had to change it slightly due to a taxi rank making it fairly congested.
“We selected the route now to run behind SUPERSPAR Spargs,” she said. “It will go along Avalon Road to Imp Lane, Junction Road and Hillcrest Drive to the finish.”
Boonzaaier said the change applied to both the 5km and 9.8km races and would be similar in the degree of difficulty to previous years.
With their emphasis on family participation and encouraging a healthy lifestyle, Shadrach said the Family Challenge was a perfect fit which had been enthusiastically supported by the East London community.
“Despite the torrid weather we have had in past years, the East Londoners have come out in their numbers,” she said.
“Nothing seems to deter them. There is an incredibly high spirit among the entrants and it’s great to see families turning up in their numbers.”
Shadrach said there would be the usual array of entertainment, including popular comedian Gino Fabbri and emcee Graham Gordon, plus other lucky draw incentives.
“One of the awesome lucky draw prizes is a spa treatment and lunch for two people at the Miarestate Boutique Hotel and Spa (www.miarestate.co.za),” she said.
Online entries (www.sparfamilychallenge.co.za), as well as those at East London cycle stores, close on October 5.
Registration is from 10am to 7pm on October 7 at the Beaconhurst sports field, as well as from 8am to 9.30am October 8.
