The PE Opera House in its tradition in honouring living legends from the likes of acclaimed actress Nomhle Nkonyeni to theatre legends Atholl Fugard, Dr John Kani and Winston Ntshona will this year be celebrating the life and times of the iconic Choirmaster Kholekile Doc Mkhonto. This moving tribute is a collaboration between the PE Opera House and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, supported by NEMCA will be taking place this Sunday 26 February featuring performances from 3 Nelson Mandela Bay Choirs paying homage to Doc and a majestic musical.
Kholekile ‘Doc Mkhonto Is a multi-award winning doyen of choral music and a venerated educator whose products include Dr Mthuthuzeli Nyoka, former SABC Eastern Cape Deneral Manager Zola Yeye and many more. Doc Mkhonto a sage whose contribution to performing arts surpass the accolades that have been bestowed to him. Having retired from teaching in 2006 after 36 years in the field he has since opened up a school of music teaching young children music, drama and how to play a variety of musical instruments.
Kholekile ‘Doc’ Mkhonto is part if choral narrative strategies with underlying prevailing socio-political discourse that may be said to typify township choral music as a whole. This prevailing discourse may be understood as the profound yearning amongst the people of the township people to address their far reaching sense of loss, a call for the ‘return of Africa’, and thus for a deep and long – lasting solution to the social problems of our society” – Zelda Potgieter and Vuyani Mazomba, Liberating Voices.
