The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned its residents about unregistered service providers of fire equipment that currently service fire extinguishers in the area.
Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said some companies allegedly still service fire extinguishers with green labels which were discontinued in 2003 due to environmental concerns.
“The incorrect servicing of fire equipment could be detrimental when a fire broke out resulting in defective extinguishers that could lead to more damage to property,” Baron said.
He urged residents to service their fire extinguishers with companies registered with the South African Qualification and Certification Committee.
Meanwhile, Baron said electricity supply to several rural areas in that vicinity could be affected on Sunday due to the upgrading and maintenance of equipment.
“Areas bounded by Witteklip, Fitches Corner, Van Stadens, Woodridge, Sunnyside, Thornhill, Matjiesfontein, Longmore, Loerie Filtration Plant, Gamtoos Pumping Station, Gamtoos River area, Gamtoos River Mouth, Mauritzkraal, Nocton Farm, Handsworth Estate and Savannah will be affected.
“As there is no guarantee that supply will be off throughout the whole period, installations in all premises must be regarded as being live during these hours,” Baron said.
