The number of civil cases for debt reported at the East London magistrateâ€™s court dropped by more than 50% from February to March this year.
Figures released by Statistics South Africa this morning show that just 160 cases were reported in East London, bringing the total for the first three months of the year to 769. Over the same period last year 2 374 cases were reported.
Against that, the number of cases of civil debt reported at the Port Elizabeth magistrateâ€™s offices rocketed to 11 178 in March this year.
In the same month last year, 4 548 cases were reported.
A total of 22 086 cases were reported in the first three months of this year compared to 9 751 in the same period in 2011. The total number of cases reported in Port Elizabeth last year was 60 025, while in 2010 the tally was 37 136.
StatsSA said nationally there was a 7.7% decrease in the total number of summonses issued for civil debt in the first three months of 2012 com-pared with the same period in 2011.
StatsSA said the same decrease of 7.7% was also recorded in March compared with the same month last year.
