Bucs will bounce back – McCarthy

The two sides will meet at Kwanza Sul on Saturday at 4pm.

Pirates, who were addressed by chairman Irvin Khoza on Tuesday, take on Libolo in the return match after the Angolans walloped them 3-1 in the first game two weeks ago.

Khoza told the players and technical staff that the club is bigger than all of them, adding that he will address their grievances urgently.

Sowetan has learnt that there are growing tensions between coach Julio Leal and some of his technical staff members as well as players.

McCarthy said yesterday: “We are going to bounce back. Since our last game in the first leg, we played three league games and have been scoring goals. With good team selection, and if the tactics are spot-on, we can do to them what they did to us.

“We did not underestimate them (Libolo), it’s just that we just didn’t do our homework properly.”

McCarthy said they will attack from the first whistle to get one or two early goals to unsettle the Angolans.

“Obviously, the earlier we score the better for us to get more goals. At the same time, we have to defend properly to avoid conceding.”

The veteran marksman described the spectacular overhead kick in their 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership last Sunday as his best goal yet for Pirates.

“I think so far all the goals I have scored for Pirates were of special significance and were all important to the club, but in terms of finesse and quality, the goal against Maritzburg was the best.”

McCarthy wants to make history by being the first South African to win Champions League gold medals in Europe and Africa.

He won the European one with FC Porto of Portugal.
