Bucs take CAF match to PE

BRANCHING OUT: Orlando Pirates’ Micky Modisane

Bucs communications manager Mickey Modisane said they were hoping to finalise the deal in the next few days.

“Negotiations are at an advanced stage with the municipality but there are a few issues that are still to be sorted out,” Modisane said.

“We have played a continental club championship match in Port Elizabeth in 2010, so we are quite familiar with the facility.

“We are not only representing Pirates in this tournament but the entire country, hence we are not hosting this match at Orlando Stadium.”

Bucs crashed out of the Champions League at the same venue in 2010 after being eliminated by Gaborone United of Botswana on the away-goals rule.

Pirates coach Julio Leal has made it clear that winning the Champions League is his number one priority, in line with the mandate from club chairman Irvin Khoza. Khoza said he wanted to see his club add a second gold star to their jersey after getting the first one when they won the tournament in 1995. The Buccaneers became the first and only southern African club to win the Champions League after beating Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas, courtesy of Jerry Sikhosana’s goal.

“TP Mazembe (of the Democratic Republic of Congo) have proved there is nothing impossible as long as you work hard, when they won the Champions League and went all the way to become the first African club to reach the Fifa World Club Cup,” Khoza said. “We owe it to Amabhakbhaka (Pirates’ supporters) and the entire nation. We have assembled a team that is hungry for success.

Pirates, meanwhile, have confirmed they have released striker Siphelele Mthembu to Lamontville Golden Arrows for the remainder of the season.

They also confirmed that they had been inundated with offers for unsettled midfielder Clifford Ngobeni.

The Buccaneers, however, have not made an offer for Mamelodi Sundowns winger Elias Pelembe, who has been linked with the reigning league champions.

Meanwhile, Black Leopards will host Motor Action of Zimbabwe in the CAF Confederation Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on February 18. “We are ready for our Zimbabwean brothers and we will use this game to expose our players to international football,” said Leopards boss David Thidiela.
