Once again teamwork and team spirit prevailed when two alleged murder suspects were arrested minutes after a fatal shooting took place in Bethelsdorp yesterday afternoon.
At about 17:00, members of the Visible Gang Intervention Team were patrolling near Bantam Street in Bethelsdorp when they responded to a call of a shooting in Bantam Street. A white VW Golf was parked in front of a house and one person was fatally shot. The community pointed to an open field where a suspect was seen running. The members searched the area between Bosch and Bardien streets. Backup was requested when a group of gang members were spotted nearby. As police approached them, one person started to run but was arrested by pursuing officers. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm. The area was thoroughly searched and a second firearm was recovered. The suspect is affiliated to the ‘Preston Shaw Boys’ Gang.
The deceased person was identified. He sustained several gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations conducted on the scene led to the arrest of the second suspect who was standing among other gang members.
Police confiscated a 45mm calibre firearm and a 9mm calibre firearm with ammunition. One suspect was detained on a charge of murder while the other was detained on charges of murder, illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. They are expected to appear in court soon. The incident is gang related.
