Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Benson Fihla said the city is proud and honoured to have been chosen to host the Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championships that is currently being hotly contested by competitors from 28 countries at the exquisite The Boardwalk Hotel.
“This is a clear indication that our City is among the best in the world,” said Mayor Fihla at a civic breakfast held to welcome participants and to thank the organizers and sponsors of the event.
More than a thousand participants from different countries are competing for top honours at this tournament, which is considered one of the toughest chess battle fields in the world.
Convener of the magnificent event, Dr Brian van Zyl said Nelson Mandela Bay has been a good host and partner to the event. He thanked the city for supporting the tournament.
“We could not have asked for a better host for the 2013 Championships. A heartfelt thank you to the Executive Mayor and the people of the City for being such good hosts,” Dr Van Zyl said.
