Port Elizabeth – Eastern Cape police are investigating whether a baby boy left on a Port Elizabeth street on Friday is the one stolen from the Dora Nzinga hospital.
The boy was left in Tshewu Street, New Brighton, by two women driving a BMW X5 with registration number FFG 552 EC, Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said in a statement.
“The police are waiting for the DNA [tests] that will help to determine whether the boy is the one who was taken, before he can be given to the mother.”
On Wednesday a woman pretending to be a student nurse stole the newborn baby from the Dora Nzinga hospital.
Provincial health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the woman woke the baby’s mother on Tuesday night and instructed her to take a bath.
“When the mother returned, the ‘nurse’ and baby were nowhere to be found.”
Anyone with information about the matter was asked to contact Warrant Officer September on 071 3524 514.
