Asanda singing at the Helenvale Resource Center in Port Elizabeth on 12 December 2015 in front of Department of Public Works Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan.
Asanda Mqiki is a versatile vocalist who is determined to set world stages on fire, with a background in contemporary music and jazz, and her good humour for good taste. Asanda has in her short career wowed audiences in different parts of the country.
She is a product of the excellent choral tradition of Cowan High School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth – the same tradition that has helped the Mathew Singers and the Joy of Afrika Choir to be choral powerhouses in South Africa for years. Asanda Mqiki studied at the National School of the Arts in Gauteng and performed with musical outfits of the likes of Take Note and Soil. In her list of memorable performances she includes sharing the stage with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, The Soil, Putuma, Berita, Khaya Mahlangu and many more. Her vocal prowess swings somewhere between Bobby Mcferrin and Betty Carter with a dazzling genius to produce jazz sounds best absorbed with eyes closed. Being on the Joy of Jazz stage as a lead vocalist of her former band Take Note jazz band in 2011 served to show Asanda just how much of a command she had with her gift.
