Volkswagen and Motorsport South Africa are once again partnering in a bid to find South Africa’s next racing talent.
The search is back on after a successful run last year which saw Jonathan Mogotsi winning the inaugural Volkswagen Driver Search competition.
“We are very pleased with Jonathan’s performance in the Engen Volkswagen Cup, especially because he is a product of the Volkswagen Driver Search competition. South Africa has immense talent and we want to find and nurture our country’s racing stars,” said Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport.
This year, Volkswagen and Motorsport South Africa will be putting 16 drivers of colour between the ages of 15 and 25 who have some motorsport-related experience through their paces.
The competition, which will take place on 23 – 26 September, will test the all-round skills of the hopefuls and the two best performing candidates will participate in a three-hour endurance race at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth to determine the 2017 Volkswagen Driver Search winner.
“The winner from the endurance race in Port Elizabeth will potentially earn themselves a place in the Volkswagen team competing in 2018 Engen Volkswagen Cup series,” added Rowe.
“The Engen Volkswagen Polo Cup is a very competitive series and having won the Driver Search competition last year, I wanted to absorb and learn as much as I could,” says Jonathan Mogotsi.
“From qualifying in 11th place in Round 1 in Cape Town to claiming my maiden victory in Round 5 in Port Elizabeth in July, I am happy with my performance and growth this year,” he said.
“If you want to get into Motorsport, do your research and when the opportunity arises at race days for instance, ask the manufactures as many questions as possible to increase your understanding of the sport,” Mogotsi advises.
Entry to the Volkswagen Driver Search programme will be by invitation only.
